The EDSCG is to encompass diplomacy, information, and military coordination, as well as economic elements. South Korea sees big significance in the new dialogue. "The EDSCG is meaningful in that it is a comprehensive mechanism on policy and strategy levels,... that can maximize integrated deterrence against North Korea." So far, existing committees on deterrence were generally confined to military level strategy issues. "They were only talking about specific military operation systems, and they need to report to a higher-ranked headquarters, which takes time for them to undertake the measures in reality. Compared to that, the newly formed Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group is a more broad strategy and policy making group and very much independent."
