Greetings from University of Washington International & English Language Programs.
We are writing to let you know that as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our Intensive English Program, Business English Program, and Global Business Program will continue to be taught remotely (online) during summer quarter.
Short Term English Program (STEP) courses that are scheduled in August and September, and the Graduate School Preparation Program, may be offered in classrooms. A final decision on those programs has not been made at this time. If classroom instruction is not possible, we will offer some courses online.

I am writing to share some news about our Intensive English Program. As you likely know, intensive English programs in the U.S. have experienced significant reductions in enrollment over the past several years. Unfortunately, the UW Intensive English Program (IEP) is no exception and our enrollment is now less than half of what it once was. This drop in enrollment has been accompanied by considerable financial losses and the program is now operating at a deficit. As a result, University leadership has unfortunately begun discussions about possibly closing the Intensive English Program at the end of summer quarter 2020.
This news may come as a shock and is likely a bit unsettling. However, I want to stress that a final decision has not been made. We continue to operate as normal and remain committed to providing our students with the same high quality instruction and services that they are accustomed to. We also continue to welcome applications for students who wish to enroll in the IEP for spring and summer quarters.
A final decision about the future of the program is expected by mid-March and we will not be processing IEP applications for autumn quarter until that time. Your partnership and your students matter greatly to us, and I want to reassure you that if a decision is made to close the IEP, we will notify you as soon as possible and are committed to supporting each of our students in finding alternative schools and options for achieving their goals.
Lastly, I want to emphasize that this possible closure would only impact our Intensive English Program. There are no plans to close any of our other programs (Global Connections, Global Business Certificate, Short Term English Program, etc).

Meet the MAAIS Class of 2019
This quarter, we welcome 15 new students to the MAAIS program, bringing our total number to 20. As usual, the cohort represents an impressive and diverse range of professional and personal experiences. This year's students have worked in journalism, technology, human rights, financial services, human resources, education and nursing; have served in the Peace Corps, Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines; and were born in Europe, Africa and Asia, in addition to the United States. We hope you will have an opportunity to meet them at a future MAAIS event.
Instructor spotlight: John Koenig
This autumn, we are fortunate to have John Koenig, a retired foreign service officer, bringing his deep experience and commitment to U.S. global engagement to our students. His course, U.S. Foreign Policy and International Engagement, seeks to give students a solid understanding of how U.S. foreign policy works -- and how it sometimes fails. "I hope students will take away the message that there is a crying need for dedicated, creative individuals to engage actively in the foreign policy process, to bring new perspectives and ideas at a time of stasis and confusion," said Koenig. "I hope some students will consider public service, including the Foreign Service, as their career path." Read more of the interview with John Koenig here.
