| 학교소개 및 특징 | 알라바마주에서 가장 오래된 공립대학교이며 1819년 연방정부에서 신학을 배우는 곳을제정하여 알라바마주에서 1820년 이를 수락하고 그 당시 주도였던 투수컬루스에서 대학을 세우기로 정했습니다. 그 후 1831년 52명의 학생으로 설립된 앨라배마대학교 투스컬루사 캠퍼스는 앨라배마주 고등교육 시스템의 근간을 이루는 주립대학으로, 150년 이상의 역사를 가진 전통있는 학교입니다. 1837년 공대 과정을 제공하는 첫번째 대학이 되었으며 남북전쟁이 일어나기 바로 전 해인 1860년에는 남군의 사관을 양성하는 군사학교가 되었습니다. 1872년 법과대학, 1881-2년 미국에서 3번째인 공과대학이 설립되었습니다. 1892년 후일 ‘크림슨 타이드(Crimson Tide)’라는 이름으로 유명해진 풋볼팀이 ‘엷은 붉은 선’이라는 뜻의 ‘신 레드 라인’이라는 이름으로 창단되었습니다. 1893년 최초의 여학생이 입학하였습니다. 1909년 교육대학, 1919년 상경대학, 1924년 대학원이 설립되었습니다. 1931년 지금의 인간환경 과학대학이 된 가정경제대학이 설립되고, 1956년 최초의 아프리카계 미국인 학생이 입학하였습니다. 1969년 도서관대학과 정보대학, 1971년 통신대학과 공중위생과학대학, 1976년 캡스턴 간호대학이 설립되었습니다. 아무래도 남부지역에 위치한 알려지지 않은 주에 있는 대학이라 한국유학생들에게 인지도는 낮은 편이라고 할 수 있습니다. 현재는 현대 자동차 공장 및 여타 한국계 기업의 현지 공장들이 있어 한국에도 알려져 있는 주이기도 합니다. 전형적인 자유분방한 대학분위기이고 특별히 인종차별에 대한 것들은 없는 편입니다. 특별히 어느 몇몇 전공들 보다는 전체적으로 골고루 강세를 보이고 있습니다. 상대적으로 명문대학인 오번대학보다는 약한 편이지만 그래도 앨라바마주에서는 가장 오래되고 좋은 주립대학중 하나라고 보면 됩니다. 상대적으로 학부는 낮은 점수의 토플점수를 요구하고 있습니다. 이 대학운동 프로그램이 매우 우수하여 수많은 운동선수들을 배출해내었고 특히 농구와 미식축구가 유명합니다. 포리스트 검프와 크림슨 타이드라는 영화에서 이 대학 미식축구팀이 나온것으로도 유명합니다. |
