| 학교소개 및 특징 | 노트르담 대학교(University of Notre Dame, 약칭 ND)는 1842년 인디애나폴리스의 카톨릭주교가 성십자가수도회(Congregation of Holy Cross)의 프랑스인 신부 Edward Sorin에게 2년 내 대학을 세루라는 명과 함께 토지를 내렸고, 이에 Edward Sorin은 다른 7명의 성직자와 함께 대학을 세웠습니다. 개교 당시에는 남자학교였으나 1972년부터 여학생의 입학을 허가하여 현재는 남녀공학대학입니다. 시카고에서 동쪽으로 90마일 정도 떨어진 곳에 위치한 인디애나주(Indiana)주 노트르담(Notre Dame)에 자리하고 있으며, 1,250에이커에 이르는 아름다운 캠퍼스에는 2개의 호수와 함께 Golden Dome으로 알려진 주 건물을 포함한 140여 개의 건물이 들어서 있습니다. Boston College와 함께 미국의 대표적인 카톨릭계 대학으로 종교에 관계없이 학생을 선발하지만 학생 대부분이 로마카톨릭교회의 신자이며, 기숙사는 남녀가 구별되어 있고 통금시간이 있습니다. 연구중심대학이자 학부중심대학으로 대학원보다는 학부과정이 더욱 다양하고 유명합니다. 인문대학(College of Arts and Letters), 건축대학(School of Architecture), 경영대학(Mendoza College of Business), 공학대학(College of Engineering), 과학대학(College of Science), 일반대학원(The Graduate School), 법학대학원(The Law School)으로 구성되어 있으며, 경영학, 공학, 정치학, 약/의대 예비과정(Pre-Med)가 유명합니다. Harvard University, Princeton University와 함께 재학생의 95% 이상이 4년만에 졸업하는 유일한 학교이며, 가장 많은 수의 졸업생이 박사학위를 받을 정도로 학구적인 대학입니다. 또한 재학생 중 절반 이상이 해외에서 교환학생으로 공부할 정도로 국제화가 잘 되어 있으며, 학부생의 의학대학원(Medical School) 합격율도 매우 높습니다. 때문에 입학경쟁률이 매우 높으며, 입학생의 79% 이상이 고등학교 성적 상위 5% 내의 학생들입니다. 1학년 학생들의 성공적인 학업을 위해 First Year of Studies라는 프로그램을 운영하고 있으며, 이 프로그램으로 인해 약 98%의 학생들이 무사히 2학년으로 진급합니다. 이는 미국에서 가장 높은 수치입니다. 또한 학부중심의 교육으로 졸업생들의 취업률이 매우 높고, 우수한 대학원으로의 진학률도 매우 높습니다. 이처럼 노트르담 대학교는 그 우수성을 인정받아 월스트리트 저널에서 선정하는 신아이비리그 대학에 Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University 등과 함께 그 이름이 올랐습니다. 또한 학업뿐만 아니라 스포츠부분에서도 매우 뛰어난 성과를 보이고 있으며, 미식축구 역사상 가장 우수하고 전설적인 팀을 보유하고 있는 것으로도 유명합니다. 단, 명문사립답게 학비가 비싼편이며, 미국의 Top 대학들 중 동양계 학생이 가장 적은 학교로 한국인 유학생수 또한 매우 적습니다. |
