| 학교소개 및 특징 | 노스캐롤라이나대학교 채플힐캠퍼스(University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)는 미국에서 가장 오래된 주립대학교로 1789년에 설립되었습니다. 현재 16개의 캠퍼스로 구성된 University of North Carolina 대학교 시스템의 일부로 University of North Carolina 대학교 시스템의 본교인 동시에 가장 규모가 큰 캠퍼스입니다. 연구중심의 명문대학으로 UNC, UNC-Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Carolina 등의 이름으로도 불립니다. 주립대학 중에서는 TOP 5 내에 들며, 미국 전체 대학 중에서도 TOP 30위 이내에 꾸준히 랭크되는 미국 최고의 명문대학 중 하나입니다. 현재 인문과학대학(College of Arts and Sciences), 일반대학원(Graduate School), 경영대학(Kenan-Flagler Business School), 치의과대학(School of Dentistry), 교육대학(School of Education), 정책대학(School of Goverment), 정보대학(School of Information and Library Science), 신문방송대학(School of Journalism & Mass Communication), 법학대학(School of Law), 의과대학(School of Medicine), 간호대학(School of Nursing), 약학대학(Eshelman School of Pharmacy), 보건대학(Gillings School of Global Public Health), 사회복지대학(School of Social Work)을 비롯하여 Friday Center for Continuing Education과 General College 등으로 구성되어 있습니다. 77개의 학사학위과정, 107개의 석사학위과정, 69개의 박사학위과정, 6개 분야의 전문학위과정을 비롯하여 다양한 수료 및 연구과정을 개설하고 있으며, 의학, 치의학, 경영학, 신문방송학(언론학), 정치학, 심리학, 생물학 등의 분야가 특히 유명합니다. 또한 의과대학, 법학대학, 경영대학의 전문대학원 과정들은 미국 내 최고수준으로 평가받고 있습니다. 단, 공과대학이 없다는 단점이 있습니다. 학부에 입학하는 학생들은 처음 2년 동안 College of Arts and Sciences에 소속되어 영어, 역사, 외국어, 수학, 자연과학 등 학부학위과정을 진행하는데 있어서 기반이 될 수 있는 기본적이고 전반적인 분야에 대한 학업을 진행하며, 그 후 전공을 선택하게 됩니다. 캠퍼스가 위치한 채플힐은 노스캐롤라이나주의 주도인 롤리(Raleigh)에서 서쪽으로 약 40km 떨어진 교외에 위치하고 있습니다. 캠퍼스는 영화 촬영지로 자주 이용될 만큼 아름다우며, 특히 대학의 상징물인 원형 건축물 Old Well은 베르사유의 비밀의 정원에 있는 사랑의 사원을 본떠 지은 것이라고 합니다. 이러한 이유로 미국에서 가장 전형적이고 이상적인 대학환경을 갖추고 있는 것으로 인식되고 있기도 합니다. 학비가 다른 명문 주립대학들에 비해 저렴한 편이지만 외국학생에 대한 입학률이 매우 낮아(전체 입학생의 80% 이상을 North Carolina주 출신들 중 선발합니다.) 입학경쟁률이 매우 높습니다. 이때문에 한국학생의 입학이 어려운 편이라 다른 비슷한 수준의 명문 주립대학들에 비해 한국에서의 인지도가 낮은 편입니다. 그러나 최고의 교수진들이 최고의 교육을 제공하는 대학으로 도전해볼 가치가 있는 대학입니다. 참고로 오랜 역사만큼 우수한 스포츠팀도 유명한데, 특히 농구팀은 Michael Jordan이 소속되었던 팀으로 더욱 유명합니다. |
