| 학교소개 및 특징 | 1872년 주정부로부터 대지를 불하받아 버지니아 농업 및 기계공학 컬리지로 설립되었다. 현재는 125개의 캠퍼스 빌딩과 2,600 에이커의 메인 캠퍼스를 가진 주립대로 성장하였다. 일반적으로 '버지니아테크' ‘버지니아공대’라는 이름으로 불린다. 1896년 버지니아농공대학, 버지니아폴리테크닉대학, 1944년 버지니아폴리테크닉대학으로 교명을 변경하였고 1970년 현재의 교명으로 바꾸었다. 버지니아주에서 규모가 가장 큰 대학이며, 미국의 50대 연구중심 대학에 속한다. 군사대학으로 설립된 까닭에 지금까지 학내군사훈련단(corps of cadets)이라는 독특한 군사훈련시스템을 계속하고 있는데, 2년 동안 소수 지원자들에게 군사훈련을 하여 졸업 후 장교로 임관한다. 메인 캠퍼스는 블랙스버그시에 위치하고 있으며 메인 캠퍼스 외에도 commonwealth 지역 및 해외에도 캠퍼스를 가지고 있다. 부속기관•시설로는 뉴먼 도서관, 학습자료센터, 미술관, 자연사박물관, 전쟁기념체육관, 라디오•텔레비전 방송국, 풍동(風洞), 비행장, 농업기지, 위성중계기지, 멀티미디어•디지털음악•필기•CAD/CAM 연구소 등이 있다. 1996년 노벨 물리학상 수상자 로버트 리처드슨이 이 대학을 졸업했다. 2007년 영문학과 학생인 재미한국인 1.5세가 벌인 총격사건으로 33명이 사망하는 비극이 일어났다 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 공학계열 프로그램에 강세를 띄고 있고 다른 주립대들이 대학원이 강세를 가지고 있는데 비해 이 대학의 경우 학부가 오히려 강세를 띄고 있다. 상대적으로 높은 순위의 버지니아 대학에 비해 공학계열은 밀리지 않는 편이다 대부분의 공학 계열과정들이 상위 50위권안에 포진하고 있다. 하지만 학교 인지도는 몇 년전의 총기 사고로 인하여 한국에 좋은 이미지는 아니고 버지니아 지역 자체도 외국 학생들이 그리 호의적인 편이 아니라 한국 유학생들에게는 인지도 면에서 떨어지고 있는 편이다. 동부지역이기는 하지만 학교가 속해있는 지역이 상대적으로 저렴한 생활비(중부지역만큼이나) 로 생활할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 공학계열학생들에게 유리한 대학이라고 할 수 있다. |
