| 학교소개 및 특징 | 미국이 독립되기전인 식민지 시대에 설립된 대학으로 245년의 역사를 가지고 있습니다. 1766년에 설립된 뉴저지 주립대중 메인 캠퍼스로 총 5개의 캠퍼스로 이루어져 있으며 5만명 이상의 학생들이 재학하고 있는 대규모 주립대학이며, 지역 특성상 백인비율이 41%로 기타 흑인 및 남미, 아시안 계열 학생들이 많이 재학하고 있습니다. 한국 유학생들은 주로 대학원에 재학중에 있고 유학생들은 많지 않은 편입니다. 뉴저지 주에서는 규모와 질로써 가장 큰 교육기관으로. 원래 퀸즈 칼리지(Queen's College)으로 1766년에 인가받아 개교하였으며, 미국 독립 이전에 정식 학위 수여를 할 수 있었던 9개의 식민지시대에 설립된 미국의 대학교들 중 하나로서 그 중 8번째로 설립되었습니다. 원래 럿거스 대학교는 네덜란드 개혁 교회의 사립 대학교로 시작되였으며, 처음에는 남자 대학교였으나 1825년 럿거스 대학으로 변경되고 1945년과 1956년에 뉴저지 주 연방법원의 법 제정에 따라 공립(주립)대학교로 바뀌었습니다. 뉴저지 주립대학인 럿거스 대학은 뉴브런즈윅(New Brunswick), 뉴어크(Newark), 캠던(Camden)에 위치한 세 개의 캠퍼스로 구성되어 있으면 가장 큰 규모의 뉴브런즈윅 캠퍼스는 그 중 메인 캠퍼스로 라리탄 강을 사이에 두고 남쪽의 뉴브런즈윅과 북쪽의 Piscataway Twp 에 걸쳐 위치하고 있습니다. 뉴브런즈윅 캠퍼스는 다시 칼리지애브뉴(College Ave), 부쉬(Busch), 리빙스턴(Livingston), 쿡/더글러스(Cook/Douglas)의 5개의 캠퍼스로 나뉘며 각각 대학본부 및 인문계열, 이공계열, 상경 및 어문계열, 농업 및 예술계열 학부가 분산 배치되어 있습니다. 뉴저지 주립대중 메인 캠퍼스에 해당되는 뉴 브런스윅이라는 소도시에 위치한 대학으로 뉴저지에 소재한 주립대중 가장 우수한 대학으로 평가받고 있습니다. 이 학교의 철학과는 미국내에서도 최 상위권에 속해있는 전공으로 매우 우수하고 노벨 경제학상을 받은 유명한 학자인 밀튼 프리드만도 이 대학 출신이기도 합니다. 상대적으로 아시아계 학생들이 많은 편이나 한국 유학생들에게 인지도는 근접지역에 있는 뉴욕주립대 스토니 브룩보다는 약한 편이며, 공대보다는 인문 사회계열이 상대적으로 우수한 대학이다. |
