| 학교소개 및 특징 | 노스웨스턴 대학교(Northwestern University)는 1851년 시카고에서 활동하던 John Evans와 8명의 실업가들이 미국 서북지역 주민들을 위한 고등교육기관으로 설립한 대학으로 일리노이주(Illinois) 시카고(Chicago)와 에반스턴(Evanston)에 위치하고 있습니다. 1853년 시카고에서 북쪽으로 20km 떨어진 미시간호수 근처의 토지 1,534㎢를 매입하고 John Evans의 이름을 따서 지명을 Evanston이라고 붙인후 그곳에 캠퍼스를 건설했으며, 1855년부터 수업을 시작하였으며, 1869년 여학생의 입학을 허가하면서 남녀공학대학이 되었고, 1873년 Evanston College for Ladies를 합병하였습니다. 현재 인문과학대학(Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences), 커뮤니케이션대학(School of Communication), 평생교육대학(School of Continuing Studies), 교육 및 공공정책대학(School of Education and Social Policy), 공학 및 응용과학대학(McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science), 일반대학원(The Graduate School), 언론대학(Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications), 법학대학(School of Law), 경영대학(Kellogg School of Management), 의과대학(Feinberg School of Medicine), 음악대학(Bienen School of Music) 등 11개의 단과대학 및 일반/전문대학원을 운영하며, 학부과정의 경우 약 124개의 학위과정, 일반/전문대학원의 경우 약 145개의 학위과정을 제공하고 있으며, 이 외에도 학석사통합과정, 석박사통합과정, 복수학위과정, 비학위과정, 수료과정 등 다양한 분야에서 다양한 형태의 교육과정을 개설하여 많은 학생들에게 넓은 교육의 기회를 제공하고 있습니다. 노스웨스턴 대학교는 미국의 대표적인 명문사립대학으로 아이비리그와 어깨를 나란히 합니다. 학부, 일반대학원, 전문대학원의 모든 과정이 강한 대학으로 특히 공학, 인문학, 사회과학 프로그램들이 유명하며, 경영학, 경제학, 정치학, 방송영화학, 언론학, 커뮤니케이션학, 생물학, 화학, 공학 등이 인기가 높습니다. 그 중에서도 방송영화학, 언론학, 커뮤니케이션학은 미국 최고 수준으로 수많은 유명 언론인과 배우들을 배출한 대학이기도 합니다. 때문에 대학의 라디오 방송국, TV 방송국, 신문사가 모두 높은 수준을 인정받고 있으며, 뛰어난 토론팀을 갖고 있어 미국 대학 토론대회에서 우승을 가장 많이 한 대학이기도 합니다. 대학원의 경우 모든 대학원이 유명하지만 그 중에서도 경영대학, 법학대학, 의학대학이 특히 유명하고, 그 중 경영대학은 다수의 유능한 CEO를 배출해온 미국 최고의 경영대학으로 미국 기업 대표들을 대상으로 하는 조사에서 자주 1위를 차지합니다. |
