Ready for Summer ?!
Greetings from sunny San Diego and Converse International School of Languages! 

 

We are looking forward to welcoming all of our students back to study with us soon! We have been taking all necessary COVID-19 precautions and following CDC guidelines since June 15, 2020. 

 

 On April 26, 2021, the U.S. Secretary of State made a  national interest determination regarding categories of travelers eligible for exceptions to a  Presidential Proclamation related to the spread of COVID-19.  The result of this exemption is that students from China, Iran, Brazil, South Africa, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, who wish to travel to the United States to study on an F-1 or M-1 visa may now qualify for this National Interest Exception if their academic program begins August 1, 2021 or later.  
Students who have a valid student visa or a valid ESTA authorization for travel under the Visa Waiver Program that was issued before the original Presidential Proclamation related to the spread of COVID-19 should contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate before traveling, if they believe they may qualify for a National Interest Exception. If a National Interest Exception is approved, they may travel on either a valid visa or ESTA authorization, as appropriate after August 1, 2021.

Junior Program Updates

Due to continued COVID-19 restrictions both in the U.S. and abroad, and certain partner universities deciding to only host virtual programs and postpone their in person programs to summer 2022, we will not be able to run all of our usual in person junior programs for summer 2021. We have the possibility to run an in-person program at the University of San Diego during the month of July 2021, depending on travel restrictions. Please check with your closest embassy to verify if you are able to travel to the U.S.  and contact juniorprograms@cisl.edu if you would like to enroll.

New Online Courses 

We have updated our platform and have added three new online courses just for you, learn more about our Aviation Englishnbsp;Medical English, and Professional Travel and Tourism Customer Service courses below!
 

Medical English

Our Medical English program will provide the necessary skills to interact with hospitals, doctor offices, EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) operations around the world. Each lesson will be custom-built and will focus on improving your ability to communicate effectively and with confidence by offering a wide variety of learning activities to properly use medical terminology and articulate appropriate doctor/patient interactions.  

Topics: human body, medical equipment, in the hospital, diagnosis I, diagnosis II, diseases and illnesses, anatomy, surgerynbsp;routine checkups, pharmacy, English for EMTs, elderly care, hospital administration, epidemics, viruses, and pandemics, etc.

           Student Learning Outcomes

        After completing this course, clients will be able to:

 
  • Identify human anatomy
  • Describe physiology
  • Explain trauma and emergency care
  • Use the language of patient interaction
  • Demonstrate core organizational concepts for managing medical record-keeping procedures
  • Use the language for general diagnostic and treatment procedures

    Aviation English

    Our Aviation English specialized program will provide you with all necessary skills to operate in a professional communication environment. You will improve your ability to communicate effectively and with confidence in all six language skill areas specified in the ICAO Holistic Descriptors and Language Proficiency Rating Scale: pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interactions.

    Our program follows the industry standards of the ICAO to ensure safety and a high quality of proficiency. Our goal for you is to achieve ICAO Operational Level 4 or higher on the rating scale. Students will receive personalized and individualized instruction to focus on their specific needs.

    Student Learning Outcomes:
    After completing this course, clients will be able to:

    • communicate effectively in voice-only (telephone/radiotelephone) and in face-to-face situations;
    • communicate on common, concrete and work-related topics with accuracy and clarity;
    • use appropriate communicative strategies to exchange messages and to recognize and resolve misunderstandings (e.g. to check, confirm, or clarify information) in a general or work-related context;
    • analyze successfully and with relative ease the linguistic challenges presented by a complication or unexpected turn of events that occurs within the context of a routine work situation or communicative task with which they are otherwise familiar; 
    • use a dialect or accent which is intelligible to the aeronautical community.

    Professional Travel and Tourism Customer Service

    Our course for professional travel and tourism customer service will provide you with the skills necessary to work in this industry. You will improve your ability to communicate effectively and with confidence using appropriate and polite language when helping customers. Students will focus on integrating their knowledge and skill of speaking, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, reading and writing into their day-to-day life within their future careers in the customer service industry.

     

    Student Learning Outcomes:
    After completing this course, clients will be able to:
    • Use polite language to deal with inquiresnbsp; problems and complaints
    • Write a r?sum?, cover letter and business letter
    • Discuss airport experiences, and compare and contrast airports
    • Demonstrate a small talk conversation
    • Engage customers in conversation using proper volume, speed, and body language
    • Complete a job application
    • Successfully provide directions using appropriate prepositions
    • Demonstrate telephone and professional e-mail etiquette
    • Prepare and use appropriate language for an interview in English
    • Provide suggestions and recommendations to customers
    • Listen and comprehend customer questions and requests
    • Clearly produce and hear American vowel and consonant sounds, intonation, and linking sounds

    Dear Valued Partner,  

    The global pandemic of the COVID-19 virus has forced the closure of CISL San Francisco for several months.  After this health crisis, it will be some time before things return to normal in San Francisco.   We have, therefore, decided it is better to consolidate the SF courses with those delivered by our school in San Diego.  This change is effective as of today. 

    At this time almost all students at the San Francisco school have returned to their countries.   The few remaining students are receiving live online classes from their CISL teachers through our online platform online.cisl.edu.   The San Diego school will continue to provide support for those students.  One of the owners of CISL, Jean-Pierre Guittard, lives in San Francisco and is also available to assist any students. 

    Once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, the remaining San Francisco students will be given an option to transfer to our school in San Diego,  or we will assist them to transfer to a similar course at another school in San Francisco. 

    We will continue to offer our Junior Program at Berkeley and the other summer locations.    The Berkeley program will be managed by the Juniors Department at CISL San Diego. 

    In addition, CISL San Diego will also begin offering the Global Success programs that were offered at CISL San Francisco.
