Good Morning Everyone.
On June 1, Citizenship and Immigration Canada are launching major changes to the International Student Program (ISP) that will impact our students over the coming years. The changes include:
1) The requirement that students study while in Canada on a study permit. Previously, students were only required to have in intent to study, but there has never been a requirement to study on a study permit until now.
2) Schools will be required to report to immigration on every student's status throughout the year. It is not clear what immigration will do when students are reported as not studying or not in good academic standing, but we are confident that it will not be positive.
3) Students (post-secondary) will be permitted to work off campus (20 hours during study periods and full time during vacation periods) from the start of their post-secondary program. Previously, students had to wait for 6 months and they needed to be academically successful during those 6 months to be eligible.
4) Canada will now have a list of approved schools who are eligible to recruit international students. Each province has gone through a vetting process to qualify schools to be eligible to be on the approved list of schools. In the past, immigration had no way of determining a qualified school from a non-approved school.
