Dear Parent and/or Guardian,
Congratulations! Your student has been selected by one or more teachers to receive recognition for achievements this year at Thornton Academy. I write today to invite you to celebrate their accomplishments and other exceptional freshmen with us.
Each department will recognize outstanding freshmen for their academic excellence during the school year. Also recognized will be students who have made remarkable progress and/or performed extremely well in courses, those who have provided notable leadership in one or more school organizations, as well as students who have earned honor roll status in quarters 1, 2 and 3 of the school year.
In early June students will be able to come to campus to receive their recognition pin, along with a printed booklet of all the honors awarded.
Our plan is to air these 'live' on the TA facebook page: facebook.com/thorntonacademy. They will also be archived there.
We will be online starting at 7:00PM, on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 and I look forward to welcoming parents, family, and friends to Thornton Academy’s 2020 Freshman Awards Night.
If you are unable to join us online at that time, a link to the video of the ceremony will be posted on the MyTA section of the school website.

MCI's April "Staycation"
The week of April vacation was a pretty quiet and low-key on the MCI campus. Every day, our boarding students enjoyed open gym, where they lifted weights, played basketball and volleyball. Some of the kids played volleyball on front campus, while others sat on a blanket enjoying the beautiful Maine weather.
We had a fun picnic on front campus where we enjoyed grilled burgers and hot dogs. We had 100% participation and many kids stuck around to enjoy S’mores later in the evening and helped with clean up. On Friday, Ms. Aidan hosted a nature walk throughout Manson Park to enjoy the scenery along the Sebasticook River.
On Saturday, we held a pizza party in the Alumni Hall Bigelow Room to end the break on a positive note. We enjoyed delicious pizza, listened to music, and hung out and talked for hours.
Our seniors are working on their senior projects, and we hear quite a bit of piano-playing throughout the week by three student musicians. While not working on assignments, students have been watching movies and playing on the Wii in the common areas.

Decorating Easter Eggs
As if there are not enough challenges, on Friday, April 10, we received over 12 inches of snow, and the power went out for most of Maine. Power remained out for most of the night and into the morning. Students had no access to the internet, so we had our first official “snow day” for our online classrooms ? maybe the first ever snow day for virtual learning in history!
Despite these added difficulties, students managed to stay positive, to relax in their own ways, and to welcome Easter weekend with uplifted spirits. On Saturday night, the Johnson family opened their home for an Easter egg extravaganza, resulting in a variety of colors, sizes, shapes, and designs for the unsuspecting eggs.
With warmer weather coming next week, we all hope to get outside around campus to toss frisbees and to play lawn games. Spring break is a week away: there will be no classes April 18 through April 26.
A well-deserved rest will be most welcome!

지난 주 금요일부터 어제까지 있었던 Thornton Academy의 Weekly Activities를 보내드립니다.
보통 오후 에는 학교대항 스포츠경기등이 펼쳐집니다.
보딩 학생들은 운동경기를 관람하러 가거나 Residential Office에서 마련한 여러 행사, 쇼핑 등등을 하며 주말을 보냅니다.
* Jan. 31 (금)-Maine Mall Trip/ Old Port Dinner Trip/Social in Stasio Dorm 등이 있습니다.
Maine Mall은 학교에서 15분 가량 떨어진 Portland 공항 근처에 있는 대형쇼핑몰입니다. Old Port는 학교에서 20분 거리에 있는 곳으로 해변을 마주한 멋진 풍경에서 식사를 할 수 있는 식당들이 모여있는 곳입니다. 외출보다 학교에 있고자 하는 학생들을 위해서는 여학생기숙사인 Stasio Dorm에서 다양한 Social을 할 수 있습니다.
* 2월1일 (토)-메인에 있는 학교 답게 아침 일찍부터 Skip Trip을 가기도 합니다. 오전 10시부터 하루종일 영화를 볼 수 있으며 12시 부터는 Rock Climbing을 하거나 도넛을 먹을 수 도 있습니다. 저녁에는 영화를 보러 외출하기도 합니다.
* 2월2일 (일)-새벽 6시에 Ski를 즐기기 위해 출발하거나 쇼핑을 즐기러 다시 Target, Nordstrom Rack, Maine Mall을 다시 갈 수도 있습니다.
오후 3시에는 Whole Food에 가서 군것질 거리도 사올 수 있습니다.
* 2월3일 (월) 부터 2월6일 (목) 까지 주중에는 넓은 캠퍼스를 가로지르며 공부를 열심히 하고 수업이 끝난 2시45분부터는 다양한 클럽활동에 매진합니다. 학생들은 Robotics Club, TEDx Club, 모의유엔 등 다양한 클럽활동에 참가하며 바쁜 일주일을 보냅니다.
* Thornton에서는 Golden Edge Program을 통해 국제학생들의 학업과 SAT/TOEFL등을 준비시키고 있습니다. 이해를 돕고자 Golden Edge Program에 대한 설명과 Maine Mall/Old Port 지도 첨부합니다.
우선 Fryeburg는 SAT 시험장소이며 Nov. Dec. April, May, Jun 에 시험을 볼 수 있습니다. October에는 Fryeburg가 아닌 근처 학교에서 시험을 볼 수 있으며 학교에서 Ride 해줍니다.
SAT 시험준비는 2월부터 4월까지 6주간 4월 시험을 위해 집중적으로 공부를 시킵니다.
일주일에 두 번/ 각 2시간씩 공부를 하며, 하루는 수학, 다른 날은 영어과목을 각 수학선생님과 영어선생님이 가르칩니다. 또한 Kahn Academy 이용법을 알려줘서 매일마다 제공되는 단어들이나 문제들을 온라인으로 풀 수 있도록 학생들을 훈련시킵니다.
토플은 필요한 학생들은 학교에서 준비를 시켜줍니다만 보통 영어권에서 2년이상 공부한 학생들은 토플시험이 필요치 않아 준비를 원하는 학생들이 없다보니 공식적으로 Tutor를 하진 않으나 원하는 학생이 있을 경우엔 언제든 시험준비를 해줄 수 있다하니 원하는 학생든 Tracy 선생님을 찾아가 의논하면 됩니다.

현재 Fryeburg에는 약간의 남학생/여학생 기숙사 자리가 남아 있습니다. .
Thanksgiving 방학은 11월23일부터 12월1일입니다. 기숙사는 11월25일 12시 정오부터 Close 하며 12월1일 오전 10시에 Open 합니다.
